Growing up has always been messy, but it used to happen in private.
Identity took shape in the quiet spaces, through personal experiments, reflections, and mistakes. Now, that process unfolds under the spotlight of the feed.
For young people, this means trying to find out who they are in front of a crowd of friends and strangers, watching and judging everything they post. The algorithm then takes over, rewarding the versions of their identity that bring the most engagement.
The culture these systems create pushes them to perform constantly, shaping their sense of self around what earns attention. The more we play along, the harder it becomes to hear our own voice beneath the noise.
This edition of Quotable Edge is about how digital culture rewards those who perform their identity in ways that benefit the system. It was inspired by the essay Identity and Struggle for attention by Colin W.P. Lewis, published at The One Percent Rule.
Idea
Algorithms influence how young people shape their identity.
Here’s what we need to understand: the system doesn’t care about us. It only cares about its own optimization. Its main agenda is to influence us to become what keeps the engine running.
I’ve heard someone say social media popularity is the survival of the fittest. I believe it’s the survival of the shapeshifter.
Insight
Instead of experimenting and growing in private, young people are pushed by algorithms to mold their identity in public based on what attracts attention.
People who discovered who they are before social media had it easier. Now, the algorithms have a central role in dictating who we have to be if we want to belong to this or that bubble.
Listen carefully: this is the music you should like, this is the style you should be wearing, and this is what you can’t say so you don’t get canceled.

This insight is so quotable because it paints a clear picture of the impact that digital culture has on the way young people develop and perform their identity.
The message hidden in the fine print of any algorithm is simple: you need to keep scrolling to find out who you need to become next to stay relevant, cool, and attention worthy.
Every online appearance is a popularity contest. Going viral is the ultimate prize for people who constantly reshape their identity to benefit the system.
But it doesn’t matter if you won the contest today. Tomorrow, you’re back at square one. It’s a game where you can easily lose your sense of self for the chance of a little hit of validation, self-esteem, and belonging.
What’s that saying? You can complain about the game or you can learn the rules. True, but this isn’t the only option:
You can play the game on your own terms.
You can play the game less often.
You can be the change you want to see in the game.
You can stop playing the game altogether.
Knowing these options exist can ease the pressure young people feel to perform online and help them find out who we are beyond the game.
